Monte Cook

Today would have been Gary’s birthday, and it’s worth it to take a minute and think about how much those of us that enjoy role playing games owe to one of the creators of the very first rpg.

I’ve told this story many times, but when we were working on 3rd Edition D&D, Gary reviewed the manuscripts for all three books. He gave good feedback, and liked what he saw. He called out the Dungeon Master’s Guide, however, in particular. He said that he learned new things about running a game from it. As that was the book I had written, and as the 1E DMG that Gary wrote was always my favorite D&D manual–and the book that really taught me what this whole crazy hobby was all about–this really meant a lot to me.

While it’s cool to work on designing a new game, Gary and Dave invented a whole new kind of game. And that’s something truly amazing.

Not for the first time, and not for the last time, thanks, Gary!

  4. The debt we owe him and Dave cannot, I think, be adequately expressed. Gary had a thread on enworld where people could ask him questions. He was always great about answering them.

  5. Its sad that I’ve played this game over over 20 years now, and never truly looked into the Man behind the Magic until a very few years before his passing. To all the lost time of appreciation; its never too late. Thank you Gary.
