Cypher Open License

The Cypher Open License (COL) allows publishers, gamers, and members of the public to freely create and publish tabletop roleplaying games compatible with, and using the rules from, the Cypher tabletop roleplaying game system—and to market them as compatible with Cypher.

Under the COL, you can create and publish adventures, settings, supplements, and even entire, self-contained games powered by Cypher. You can modify, change, and add to the rules as best serves your vision. The COL allows you to publish products for free or for profit, in print or digital form, as long as you comply with the terms of the license.

Through the Cypher Open License, publishers may incorporate content from the Cypher Reference Document (CRD), a version of the Cypher rules that includes nearly all rules content in the Cypher Character Rulebook and Cypher GM’s Guide. Character generation, core game rules, optional and variant rules, creatures, cyphers, items, artifacts, and more are included in the Cypher Reference Document. You can use as much or as little of the CRD text as you like, and change or modify as you see fit, within products created under the Cypher Open License.

Make the most of Cypher’s amazing flexibility, ease of play, narrative focus, and fun gameplay as you bring your creativity to life!

You can find the Cypher Open License and the Cypher Reference Document at the Cypher Open License site.

Please note that the Cypher Open License, although open in nature, is a legal agreement that you enter into with Monte Cook Games, LLC, if you publish under its terms. This page’s depictions of the COL’s terms are descriptive only; refer to the Cypher Open License for actual terms and conditions. Be sure you read, understand, and agree to the terms of the Cypher Open License before publishing.
