Something we at MCG most appreciate is how our words can become worlds for our family of gamers and fans. It is something we relish, and it is something we do not take lightly. We know the power of words.
And we know that words can harm.
In the Old Gods of Appalachia supplement Dig Your Own Grave, we featured a short story by Appalachian author Alder Van Otterloo, “Homecomin’.” In it, the word pook was included, an obscure derivative of a word for a mischief-making spirit in Scottish folklore. In our corrective processes before sending the book to print, the word was erroneously changed to another word for ghost by contemporary definition, which also had been used as a racial slur in the setting’s time period.
And for that, we apologize. We are deeply regretful for the harm this error caused, and apologize to all affected with our whole hearts.
We take responsibility for any fans who may feel unsafe because of this error. This error has been corrected in the digital versions of Dig Your Own Grave, and will be corrected in any future printings of the book.
We also take responsibility to our partners: to Alder for failing to uphold their intention as a writer, and to our partners at DeepNerd whose stories are crafted to openly welcome diversity in the family.
We strive to make games alongside partners who feel that they can trust us with their work that gamers can feel safe playing.
We are people who make games, and as people, we also make mistakes. We will never be perfect, but we will continue to grow and learn so that we may be better.
