Call for Indigenous Artists for Between Earth & Sky: the Roleplaying Game!

Call for Indigenous Artists for Between Earth & Sky: the Roleplaying Game!

Celestial prophecies, political intrigue, and forbidden magic. Dreamwalking, sea-singing, and crow communication. Dangerous gods, difficult choices, and sweet romances. This evocative world needs evocative art—so we need you!

Help us illustrate the Meridian, setting of Native author Rebecca Roanhorse’s bestselling Black Sun trilogy!

Monte Cook Games is holding an open call for artists with American Indigenous ties, including Arctic, Caribbean, Central, and South American cultural and heritage connections. Are you an Indigenous artist with a love for magical worlds, fantastic beasts, and stories of prophecies, destinies, and what happens to those who claim them? Submit an application below!

What is it like to work with MCG?

MCG is a diverse team that works to bring in marginalized voices across gender, sexuality, and cultural divides. Our rates are competitive within our industry, and we’re always happy to work with our artists for a schedule and rate that’s accommodating.

Led by Art Director Bear Weiter, MCG has a formidable crew of talented artists we are proud to work with and represent, including Between Earth & Sky: the Roleplaying Game cover artist Raul Cruz Figueroa.

Cover artist Raúl Cruz Figueroa (he/him) has been passionate about fantasy and science fiction since childhood. Over a 30-year career he has developed a unique artistic language that blends the aesthetics of pre-Hispanic cultures, such as the Maya and Aztec, with technological elements and imaginary worlds. He’s created artwork for trading cards, video games, advertising campaigns, and publishing projects, and his work has been exhibited in the Americas and Europe and published in books, art magazines, and general-interest publications.

We’re looking for…

  • Flexible Native artists with room in their schedules through summer 2027.
  • Detail-oriented creators who have a passion for bringing worlds to life and are dedicated to creating a faithful representation of the Meridian.
  • Familiarity with the source material—if you’ve read the Between Earth and Sky trilogy, even better!
  • Engaging, dynamic styles that will fit with our existing work for this RPG yet stand out in a crowd (or bookshelf!).

Here’s a small sample of the art we’ve already commissioned for Between Earth & Sky: the Roleplaying Game (though don’t feel like you shouldn’t apply if this isn’t your illustration style—we’re always open to looking at new ideas and aesthetics):

Seems like you’d be a good fit?

Our open call for work on Between Earth & Sky: the Roleplaying Game will be open until the end of the year—but we’re always accepting portfolios. Submit an application below!

Please note: this application form is only open to people who claim cultural, heritage, and/or traditional ties to Indigenous groups of the Americas. To bring the most honest, accurate, and faithful version possible of Rebecca Roanhorse’s world to life, and to do our due diligence in supporting and uplifting American Indigenous artistic voices, we are committed to working with and commissioning as many Native artists, editors, and sensitivity readers in this project as we are able to.

Crowdfunding Soon!

The Between Earth & Sky: the Roleplaying Game design team will include MCG Senior Designer Shanna Germain, game designer Kenna Alexander of Coyote & Crow Games, and Columbian and Indigenous American artists. Check out our pre-launch page to get more detail about the roleplaying game!

Help us spread the word!

Help support Native and Indigenous artists by sharing the word about opportunities such as this! We’d vastly appreciate anyone, whether they’re in the community or not, helping to share the word about this call so we can connect with as many Indigenous artists for this project as possible.
